Check a California SLP License Before You Rely on It
Use this guide to verify a California speech-language pathologist license, understand the license status, check renewal timing, prepare CPD hours, request written verification, or track an application.
The safest route is the official DCA License Search and the California Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers Board pages. Do not rely only on a resume, clinic website, NPI, ASHA profile, or screenshot.

Go to safety checklistCalifornia SLP License Verification in 60 Seconds
This is the quick, reliable way to check a California SLP license without confusing it with ASHA, NPI, clinic profiles, or non-state directories.
Open DCA License Search
Use the official California Department of Consumer Affairs lookup because it covers the Board and shows current, expired, and disciplinary status information.
Select the correct license type
For a licensed SLP, look for Speech Pathologist. For support roles, check Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Aide, or RPE Temporary License.
Search by license number when possible
The license number is the cleanest search. If you only have a name, confirm city, middle initial, license type, and any business/profile details before relying on the result.
Open the record, not just the search row
Read the full DCA record. Check license type, issue/expiration information, status, and any discipline indicators.
Save proof for your file
Record the official source, date checked, license number, name, license type, status, expiration, and who completed the verification.
After you know what to enter and what to match, use California DCA License Search.
Open DCA License SearchWhat to Enter and What to Match in the DCA Record
A name match alone is not enough. Use this table to avoid relying on the wrong person or wrong license type.
| What you have | Best search path | Before you rely on the result |
|---|---|---|
| License number | Search the license number first. | Confirm it belongs to the same legal name and correct license type. |
| Name only | Search by first and last name, then compare city, middle initial, and license type. | Similar-name results are common; do not assume the first result is correct. |
| Clinic website or resume | Use the name or license number from the site/resume in DCA License Search. | A clinic profile, school badge, ASHA listing, or NPI does not replace California license verification. |
| SLPA or aide information | Select the support-role license type instead of Speech Pathologist. | Check supervision requirements and role limitations before assigning work. |
| No result | Try exact spelling, alternate name, license number, and correct license type. | If still unclear, use Board contact or written verification route. |
California SLP License Status: What the Result Means
DCA status tells you what to do next. Do not stop at “found a name.” Read the status and decide whether it can be relied on.
| Status or result | What it usually means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Current / active | The license appears usable based on the DCA record. | Confirm license type, expiration date, and any discipline field before relying on it. |
| Expired | The person may not practice on that license until it is renewed or otherwise restored. | Do not hire, credential, or rely until the DCA record updates or the Board clarifies the status. |
| Suspended, revoked, or discipline shown | There may be an enforcement issue affecting practice authority or risk. | Review the DCA/Board record and use the complaint/enforcement route if needed. |
| Inactive | The license is not active for practice. | Use the reactivation route and provide required CPD proof before practicing. |
| No result | Wrong spelling, wrong license type, no California license, or a support-role license may be involved. | Search by license number and check SLPA, RPE, aide, audiologist, or temporary license categories. |
| Application pending | This is not an issued permanent license yet. | Use the Board’s Application Status & Details page and wait for the issued license record before relying on practice authority. |
Speech Pathologist vs SLPA vs RPE vs Aide: Use the Correct California Lookup
The same person may appear under a temporary, support, or assistant role. Do not assume every speech-related result is a permanent SLP license.
| License/result type | Display/code clue | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Speech-Language Pathologist | Speech Pathologist / SP | Use this for permanent SLP license verification. |
| Speech-Language Pathology Assistant | SPA | Use this for SLPA verification and supervision-related decisions. |
| Required Professional Experience | RPE | This is a temporary/experience-stage route, not the same as a full permanent SLP license. |
| SLP or Audiology Aide | AID | Use for aide registration or support-role checks, not independent SLP practice. |
| Audiologist or temporary audiology/speech license | AU, AUT, SPT, TSP and related codes | Use only for the role shown in the official record or application-status page. |
The Board’s application-status page uses display codes such as SP, SPA, RPE and AID. Match the code before assuming what authority the person has.
Open Application Status & DetailsCalifornia SLP License Renewal: Timing, Online Renewal and Delays
Renewal users need timing more than theory. The Board strongly encourages renewal after the notice arrives and warns that renewal is not complete until fully processed.
SLP renewal is every 2 years
Speech-Language Pathologist and Speech-Language Pathology Assistant licenses renew every two years, with renewal tied to the last day of the birth month.
Renew online when possible
The Board says online renewal is the fastest and easiest method. Online renewals can process in as little as 24–48 hours.
Allow at least 6 weeks
Paper renewals need a minimum of six weeks, and the Board notes manual renewal delays often happen when forms are incomplete or not given six to eight weeks.
Postmark is not enough
Postmarking before expiration may avoid delinquency fees, but it does not guarantee processing before expiration. If the license expires, you may not practice.
About 90 days before expiration
The Board sends renewal notice to the address of record about 90 days before expiration. Update your address/email so you do not miss notices.
Answer CE and conviction questions
The Board specifically warns applicants to make sure continuing education and conviction declaration questions are answered before mailing a renewal.
California SLP Continuing Professional Development Hours
For renewal, you need the right number of CPD hours and the right type of hours. Keep records because the Board can audit them.
| License situation | Total hours required | Self-study maximum | Indirect patient/client care maximum |
|---|---|---|---|
| SLP or Audiologist first renewal | 12 hours | 6 hours | 3 hours |
| SLP and Audiologist first renewal | 8 hours for each license | 4 hours for each license | 2 hours for each license |
| SLP or Audiologist regular renewal | 24 hours | 12 hours | 6 hours |
| SLP and Audiologist regular renewal | 16 hours for each license | 8 hours for each license | 4 hours for each license |
SLPA or RPE supervision hours
If you supervise an SLPA or RPE temporary license holder, the Board lists six hours before assuming responsibility as supervisor and three hours every four years afterward.
Keep records for two years beyond renewal
The Board may audit CPD records. Licensees must maintain completion records for at least two years beyond the renewal date.
Use the Board’s CPD page before choosing courses, because self-study and indirect care limits can affect whether hours count.
Open SLP/Audiology CPD requirementsIf CPD Is Not Complete by Expiration: Inactive and Reactivation
The renewal deadline is not only a payment deadline. If CPD is not complete by expiration, practice may be affected.
Inactive status may be needed
The Board says if required continuing education is not completed by the license expiration date, the licensee may place the license on inactive status.
You must cease practice
The Board states that a licensee must cease practice with an inactive license. Do not continue SLP practice while inactive.
Use reactivation form
To reactivate, submit the Request for Reactivation of License and proof of completing the required continuing education.
Written California SLP License Verification to Another State or Entity
Use written verification when another state board, employer, credentialing office, school, or agency requires the California Board to send official verification.
Another board or entity needs proof
The official PDF is for verification of Audiologist, Speech-Language Pathologist, SLP Assistant, SLP Aide, or Audiology Aide licensure to another state or entity.
$25 per request
Submit a separate form for each verification request. Each request must include the $25 processing fee, payable by check or money order.
| PDF field | What to prepare | Micro-tip |
|---|---|---|
| Licensee information | Name, license type, license number, issue date, expiration date, telephone, email. | Use the name under which the license was issued if different from the current name. |
| Agency information | Agency name, attention line, mailing address, city/state/ZIP, and agency email address. | Copy the receiving board’s address exactly to avoid delays. |
| Delivery | Regular mail/email by default; prepaid envelope if overnight mail is requested. | Without prepaid overnight envelope, verification is sent by regular mail and also emailed to the agency listed. |
| Signature and fee | Signature, date, and $25 fee per request. | If requesting multiple verifications, the form says to submit a separate form for each request. |
Use this Board form only after confirming that online DCA verification is not enough for the receiving agency.
Open Request for License Verification PDFCalifornia SLP Application Status: Check Requirements and Deficiencies
Applicants should not use DCA License Search as the only tool before a license is issued. Use the Board’s application-status page to see application requirements and deficiencies.
Last six SSN/ITIN + date of birth
The Board’s application-status page asks for the last six numbers of your Social Security Number or ITIN and your date of birth in mm/dd/yyyy format.
ATS ID, license type, requirements and deficiencies
The result displays applicant ID, license type applied for, licensure requirements, status in fulfilling requirements, and any identified deficiencies.
SP, SPA, RPE, AID and more
Use the page’s display-code legend to understand whether the application is for SLP, SLPA, RPE, aide, audiology, temporary, or military temporary routes.
Name Change, Address Change and Board Mail Problems
Missed renewal notices, wrong names and old addresses can create unnecessary license-verification confusion. Fix account details before renewal or written verification becomes urgent.
Submit the Board address-change form
The Board FAQ says address-change requests must be in writing and mailed to the Board. Do not rely only on old employer records.
Include legal documentation
The Board FAQ says name-change requests must be in writing with documentation. An updated physical license before renewal may require a processing fee per license type.
Do not wait for mail only
If your notice does not arrive, use the Board renewal page or manual renewal forms. Keep your address current so renewal deadlines are not missed.
