Ohio LPN License Verification: Check Status, Renewal and Compact Authority

Use this guide to verify an Ohio Licensed Practical Nurse, confirm current license status and expiration, check multistate authority, understand Nursys verification, renew an LPN license in 2026 or fix a missing or lapsed record.

Ohio officially licenses practical nurses as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). If you searched for an Ohio “LVN,” use the LPN license type because Ohio does not issue a separate Licensed Vocational Nurse credential.

2026 renewal alert

Ohio’s regular 2026 LPN renewal deadline was September 15. Late renewal remains available through October 31, 2026. A single-state LPN renewing during the late period owes the $65 renewal fee plus the $50 late-processing fee and the State of Ohio’s $3.50 transaction fee. If the license is not renewed by October 31, it lapses on November 1.

Quick Answer: How to Verify an Ohio LPN License

Open Ohio eLicense License Look-Up and search for the nurse’s record. A license number is usually the cleanest identifier. If you search by name, confirm that the result belongs to the correct person and that the license type is Licensed Practical Nurse under the Ohio Nursing Board.

The Ohio eLicense lookup covers records issued by multiple state boards, so finding the right name is not enough. Open the record and check the board, license type, current status and other available details before using the result for hiring, credentialing or patient-care decisions.

For a broader RN, LPN and APRN workflow, including discipline and compact checks, see our Ohio Nursing License Verification guide.

Primary source

Ohio eLicense

The public Ohio eLicense system includes Nursing Board records and states that the information comes directly from its database and is updated daily.

Nursing-specific

Nursys

Use Nursys when you need nurse-license verification across participating boards, compact information, endorsement verification or public discipline information.

Avoid this mistake

Do not verify the wrong credential

An RN, CNA/STNA, medication aide or another healthcare credential does not establish Ohio LPN authority. Confirm the record specifically shows LPN.

Ohio LPN vs LVN: Which License Type Should You Search?

Ohio uses the title Licensed Practical Nurse. “Licensed Vocational Nurse” is a nationally familiar search term, but Ohio does not issue a separate LVN license.

Ohio terminology

Select LPN

The Ohio Board of Nursing identifies Licensed Practical Nurse as the practical-nursing license category. When searching Ohio records, look for LPN rather than expecting an LVN category.

National terminology

LPN/VN may appear in compact resources

Nurse Licensure Compact and Nursys materials may use LPN/VN terminology because participating jurisdictions use both “practical nurse” and “vocational nurse” titles. That does not create a separate Ohio LVN license.

Ohio LPN License Lookup: Step-by-Step

Use this workflow for employer onboarding, staffing, personal verification, travel nursing, background credentialing or checking whether a recently renewed Ohio LPN license is showing correctly.

Open Ohio eLicense License Look-Up

Use the public lookup instead of relying on a résumé, old license card, employer profile or private directory.

Use the LPN license number when available

A number-based lookup reduces same-name mistakes and is especially useful for hospitals, home-health agencies, staffing companies and travel-nurse files.

If using a name, start with the strongest fields

Enter the legal name carefully. If the first search does not work, consider a maiden or former name and avoid overloading the search with unnecessary criteria.

Confirm the record belongs to the Nursing Board

Ohio eLicense contains records for many state boards. Do not rely on a same-name professional record belonging to another regulated occupation.

Confirm the credential is LPN

Make sure the license type matches Licensed Practical Nurse. The same individual may hold another Ohio healthcare credential.

Check current status and available details

Review the status, license number, credential type and available record details. When multistate authority matters, also check Nursys or the Ohio Board’s compact guidance.

Save dated verification proof

For employment or compliance files, record the official source, date checked, legal name, license number, status and any compact or discipline information relevant to the decision.

Technical support is different from licensing support

The eLicense Help Desk handles login or registration problems. Ohio eLicense specifically tells users with licensing questions to contact the licensing board instead.

How to Read an Ohio LPN Verification Result

Result or field What it means What to do Avoid this mistake
Active / current The Ohio LPN license appears current in the official record. Match the identity, license type and other details before relying on it. Do not assume active automatically means multistate.
Inactive The license is not active for normal Ohio nursing practice. Use the Board’s reactivation process before practicing. Do not treat inactive status as a normal renewal delay.
Lapsed The nurse did not complete the required renewal before the license lapsed. Use reinstatement, not ordinary renewal. Do not work as an Ohio LPN while the license is lapsed.
Board action / discipline A public regulatory action may affect the license or practice conditions. Review official Board and Nursys discipline information. Do not interpret a short label without reading the public action.
Multistate / compact Interstate practice authority may exist under the Nurse Licensure Compact. Verify the current multistate record and primary state of residence requirements. An active single-state Ohio license is not automatically an MSL.
No result The search information, name, board filter, jurisdiction or credential may be wrong. Use the troubleshooting order below. Do not conclude that the person was never licensed.

Ohio eLicense vs Nursys: Which Verification Should You Use?

Public status lookup, national nursing verification and formal verification sent to another organization are different tasks.

Your task Best route Why Fee note
Check an Ohio LPN today Ohio eLicense License Look-Up Direct public Ohio professional-license record. Public lookup does not require a paid verification request.
Check nurse license and compact information nationally Nursys QuickConfirm Nursing-specific national verification and discipline information for participating jurisdictions. QuickConfirm is different from paid endorsement verification.
Send Ohio verification to another Board of Nursing Nursys Request Verification Ohio directs nurses to Nursys for endorsement verification to another board. $30 through Nursys.
Send verification to a third party that is not a Board of Nursing Ohio eLicense account → Send Verification Ohio Board of Nursing provides a separate service request for third-party verification. $15 non-refundable Board fee.
Check a temporary Ohio nursing license Ohio eLicense public lookup The Board says temporary licenses can be viewed publicly. The Board does not provide formal verification of a temporary license as a full license.

Ohio LPN License Renewal in 2026

Ohio LPN licenses renew in even-numbered years. For the 2026 cycle, the normal renewal period began July 1, the regular deadline was September 15, late renewal runs September 16 through October 31, and an unrenewed license lapses November 1.

Cycle

Even-numbered years

Ohio law places Licensed Practical Nurse renewal in even-numbered years. RN renewal follows a different odd-numbered-year schedule.

Regular period

July 1 through September 15

The Ohio Board announced July 1 as the start of the 2026 LPN renewal period and September 15 as the regular renewal deadline.

Late period

September 16 through October 31

A late-processing fee applies when renewal is submitted after September 15 but before the license lapses.

Lapse

November 1

If the LPN license has not been renewed or placed inactive by October 31, it lapses on November 1 of the renewal year.

Portal

Renew through Ohio eLicense

Applications and renewal requests are managed through Ohio eLicense. Log in to your account and use the options for the LPN license.

After payment

Recheck the public record

A receipt shows that payment was submitted. Recheck Ohio eLicense afterward to confirm the public license record reflects the renewed status.

Current late-renewal cost

Ohio law sets the LPN renewal fee at $65 and the late-processing fee at $50. Ohio eLicense also charges a $3.50 transaction fee. That makes the late-period single-state renewal payment $118.50 when these charges apply together.

Multistate renewal

Ohio’s multistate RN/LPN renewal fee is $75. During the late period, the $50 late-processing fee is added, and the State’s transaction fee also applies. Confirm your actual eLicense total before submitting payment.

Ohio LPN Continuing Education Requirements for 2026 Renewal

The standard Ohio RN/LPN renewal rule is 24 contact hours of continuing education, including at least one Category A hour related to Ohio nursing law and rules. Important exceptions apply to first renewals and recent endorsement licensees.

LPN situation CE requirement Category A Important note
Standard two-year renewal 24 contact hours At least 1 hour CE must meet Ohio Board requirements.
First renewal after Ohio licensure by NCLEX examination No CE required for that first renewal Not required under the first-renewal exemption The exemption applies to the first renewal following licensure by examination.
Licensed by endorsement for 1 year or less before first renewal 12 contact hours 1 hour This is a reduced first-renewal requirement for recent endorsement licensees.
Licensed by endorsement for more than 1 year before first renewal 24 contact hours 1 hour The standard total applies.
LPN also holds an active Ohio RN license Separate LPN CE requirement may not apply Follow the applicable Ohio rule Ohio Administrative Code provides an exception when an LPN also has an active Ohio RN license.
2026 reporting-period rule

The Ohio Board states that the March 26, 2026 change to the definition of the CE reporting period does not change the 2026 LPN reporting period. For the 2026 LPN renewal, the reporting period remains November 1, 2024 through October 31, 2026. The revised reporting-period approach begins with the 2028 LPN renewal cycle.

Do you upload CE certificates when renewing?

The Board’s renewal guidance says nurses generally attest that CE requirements have been met rather than automatically submitting CE documentation with the renewal. Keep supporting CE records because the Board can request documentation during an audit.

What to Have Ready Before Renewing an Ohio LPN License

Account details
  • Ohio eLicense login credentials.
  • Current mailing address.
  • Current email address.
  • Social Security Number information if it has changed since the prior renewal.
  • Correct LPN license selected in the dashboard.
Renewal completion
  • Required CE completed or scheduled to meet the October 31 requirement.
  • Any requested citizenship, court or other supporting documents ready for electronic upload.
  • Visa, MasterCard or Discover credit/debit card with sufficient funds.
  • Accurate responses to disclosure and renewal questions.
  • Receipt or confirmation saved after submission.
Electronic documents matter

The Board warns that additional documentation may be required and that requested materials must be uploaded electronically through eLicense. An application can remain incomplete if required documents or payment are missing.

Ohio LPN Fees: Renewal, Late Renewal, Verification and Reinstatement

Ohio LPN Multistate License and Nurse Licensure Compact Verification

Ohio joined the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 1, 2023. An Ohio LPN may hold a single-state license or, when eligible, an Ohio multistate license. Active Ohio status alone does not prove multistate authority.

Residency

Ohio must be the primary state of residence

Applicants seeking an Ohio multistate license must provide acceptable proof that Ohio is their Primary State of Residence.

License

Active and unencumbered

The Board lists an active, unencumbered RN or LPN license among the requirements for Ohio multistate licensure.

Background

Current BCI and FBI checks

Multistate applicants must complete state and federal fingerprint-based criminal record checks.

NCLEX

NCLEX requirement

Ohio’s multistate requirements include graduation from an approved prelicensure program and passing the NCLEX.

Conversion

Renew first during renewal season

Ohio instructs nurses who are converting during a renewal period to renew the RN/LPN license before submitting the multistate conversion request.

Employer check

Verify the actual MSL record

For travel, telehealth or interstate assignments, use Nursys and Board compact guidance instead of assuming an Ohio LPN can automatically practice in every compact state.

Ohio LPN Endorsement and Out-of-State Verification

If you already hold a practical or vocational nursing license elsewhere and want Ohio licensure, public verification is only one part of the process. Use Ohio’s licensure-by-reciprocity route rather than treating a license lookup as an endorsement application.

Apply

Use Ohio eLicense

The Ohio Board uses eLicense for licensure applications. Applicants licensed outside Ohio should use the RN/LPN Licensure by Reciprocity application route.

  • Complete the Ohio application.
  • Provide required license verification.
  • Complete required BCI and FBI criminal record checks.
  • Complete applicable Ohio Category A CE requirements.
  • Monitor the application inside eLicense.
Verification

Nursys may handle board-to-board verification

Ohio uses Nursys for nurse verification when the participating jurisdiction supports it. If you need Ohio verification sent to another board, the Ohio Board specifically directs users to Nursys and lists a $30 verification fee.

If your source or destination state is Pennsylvania, our Pennsylvania Nursing License Verification guide explains PALS and Nursys roles. For Kentucky, see our Kentucky Nursing License Verification guide.

Initial and multistate applicants need fingerprint-based checks

Ohio law requires applicants for Board licensure or certification to submit fingerprints for both Ohio BCI and FBI criminal record checks. The Board does not process the fingerprints itself; processing is handled through BCI.

Checking an Ohio LPN Application Status

A public license lookup answers whether a license record exists. An application-status question is different and is best handled inside your Ohio eLicense account.

Status What it generally means What to do
Pending The application has not been fully completed and submitted. Return to the application and finish required fields.
Generate Fee A fee is still required. Complete the payment step in eLicense.
Submitted The Board has received the application. Monitor the dashboard for additional requirements.
In Review Board staff are reviewing the application. Check eLicense messages and outstanding items.
In Review / Exam Eligible Required examination-application materials have been received. Follow Pearson VUE/ATT instructions when applicable.
Active The license has been issued and is current. Confirm it in the public license lookup.

Expired or Lapsed Ohio LPN License: Renewal vs Reinstatement

An Ohio LPN who misses the October 31 renewal deadline does not continue through the normal late-renewal route after November 1. The license lapses and reinstatement becomes the relevant process.

November 1

License lapses

Ohio law states that an LPN license not renewed or classified inactive by the deadline lapses on November 1 of the applicable even-numbered renewal year.

Practice

Do not practice on a lapsed license

Ohio rules make clear that practicing nursing with an inactive or lapsed license can result in disciplinary action.

Reinstatement

Use the reinstatement application

Once the license has lapsed, use the Ohio Board’s reactivation or reinstatement route instead of attempting ordinary renewal.

Five-year background-check rule

Ohio law requires a new state and federal criminal records check when a nursing license has been inactive for at least five years or lapsed for at least five years at the time of reactivation or reinstatement.

Ohio LPN Discipline, Board Actions and Public Records

License status alone may not answer every employer or patient-safety question. If the record or credentialing process indicates a board action, review the public regulatory information rather than relying on a verbal explanation.

Nursys

Public nursing discipline

The Ohio Board directs users to Nursys QuickConfirm for nurse-license verification and publicly available discipline information.

Board records

Public action is not the same as a complaint

Ohio states that complaint and investigative records can be confidential even when a final disciplinary action becomes public.

Employer caution

Read the actual action

Probation, restriction, suspension and other orders can have different effects. Review the official record before making a staffing or credentialing decision.

No Ohio LPN License Result? Troubleshoot in This Order

Problem Possible reason What to do
No result by name Spelling, maiden name, former name or overly narrow search criteria. Try the license number first, or simplify the name search.
Several people have the same name Name-only search is too broad. Match the license number, credential type and other identifying record details.
Wrong professional record appears Ohio eLicense contains many boards. Confirm the record belongs to the Nursing Board and is specifically an LPN credential.
Nurse says the license is multistate but lookup is unclear Single-state and multistate authority are being confused. Use Nursys and Ohio compact guidance.
Renewal payment was made but old information still appears Application may still be incomplete, processing may not be finished or additional documents may be required. Check the private eLicense dashboard, messages and application status before calling the Board.
The person says they are an LVN They are using terminology from another state. For an Ohio-issued practical-nurse license, search the LPN credential.
License lapsed after October 31 The 2026 renewal was not completed in time. Use reinstatement rather than continuing to retry ordinary renewal.
Do not send sensitive personal information to private lookup sites

A public license search normally does not require you to upload Social Security numbers, identity documents or fingerprint records to a third-party directory. Use private data only inside the correct official account or application process when required.

Ohio LPN / LVN License Verification FAQs

How do I verify an Ohio LPN license online?

Use the Ohio eLicense License Look-Up. Search by license number when available, or use the nurse’s legal name, then confirm that the record belongs to the Nursing Board and that the license type is Licensed Practical Nurse. Review the current status and use Nursys when compact, endorsement or national nurse-verification information is needed.

Does Ohio use LPN or LVN?

Ohio uses the title Licensed Practical Nurse, abbreviated LPN. Ohio does not issue a separate Licensed Vocational Nurse license. If you searched for an Ohio LVN, use the LPN credential in Ohio eLicense and Ohio Board of Nursing resources.

Is Ohio eLicense primary-source verification?

Ohio eLicense is the State of Ohio public professional-license lookup. Its License Look-Up page states that the information comes directly from its database and is updated daily. The Ohio Board also identifies eLicense as a primary-source verification route for license status.

When do Ohio LPN licenses renew?

Ohio LPN licenses renew in even-numbered years. In the 2026 cycle, renewal opened July 1, the regular deadline was September 15, late renewal runs September 16 through October 31, and a license that is not renewed or made inactive lapses on November 1.

How much is Ohio LPN renewal in 2026?

The statutory single-state LPN renewal fee is $65. A $50 late-processing fee applies after September 15 and before the license lapses, and Ohio eLicense also charges a $3.50 transaction fee. Ohio’s multistate RN/LPN renewal fee is $75 before any applicable late-processing and transaction fees.

How many continuing education hours does an Ohio LPN need?

The standard requirement is 24 contact hours, including at least one Category A hour related to Ohio nursing law and rules. No CE is required for the first renewal after Ohio licensure by NCLEX examination. An LPN licensed by endorsement for one year or less before the first renewal needs 12 hours, including one Category A hour.

What happens if I miss the October 31 Ohio LPN renewal deadline?

If an Ohio LPN license is not renewed or placed inactive by October 31 of the applicable even-numbered renewal year, it lapses on November 1. A lapsed license is not valid for Ohio LPN practice, and the nurse must use the Board’s reinstatement process.

Should I use Ohio eLicense or Nursys to verify an LPN?

Use Ohio eLicense for the public Ohio state record. Use Nursys when you need nursing-specific verification across participating boards, compact or multistate information, endorsement verification or public discipline information.

Does an active Ohio LPN license automatically mean the nurse has a compact license?

No. Ohio participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, but a nurse must meet multistate eligibility requirements and hold the appropriate multistate license. Verify the actual compact or multistate record through Nursys and Ohio Board guidance when interstate practice matters.

What should I do if no Ohio LPN license result appears?

Try the license number, exact legal name, former or maiden name and a simpler search. Confirm that you are checking the Nursing Board and the LPN credential. If compact or another-state licensure may be involved, also check Nursys. For unresolved licensing questions, contact the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Verify the Ohio LPN Record Before You Rely on It

Start with Ohio eLicense for the public Ohio record, confirm that the credential is LPN, and match the nurse’s identity and status. Use Nursys when compact practice, endorsement or national nurse verification matters. For the 2026 renewal cycle, remember that the regular September 15 deadline has passed, late renewal closes October 31, and an unrenewed license lapses November 1.
