Kentucky Nursing License Verification: Lookup & Renew Online
Verify a Kentucky RN, LPN, APRN, temporary permit, provisional license, SANE credential, dialysis technician, nurse aide or medication aide record—and then use the correct KBN route for renewal, compact privileges, CE, endorsement, reinstatement or a complaint.
Quick answer: use KBN for the Kentucky record, then choose the next action
Start with the Kentucky Board of Nursing License Verification Portal. It validates RN, LPN, APRN, provisional and temporary authority, SANE, DT, DTA, LCPM, SRNA and CMA records. Select the correct match and open View Report; the result row alone is not the complete verification.
Use Nursys only when you need participating-board discipline information, employer monitoring or an RN/LPN verification sent to another U.S. board. Use the private KBN Nurse Portal for renewal, applications, application status, profile changes and reinstatement—not for a public lookup.
Annual renewal for LPN, RN, APRN, DT and SANE credentials runs from September 15 through midnight October 31 Eastern Time. CE may be finished after submitting renewal, but it must be completed by the October 31 deadline.

How to complete a Kentucky nursing license lookup
Use the public verification portal
Public verification does not require a Nurse Portal login. Start with the official KBN-linked search.
Search with the strongest identifier
Use the license or credential number first, NCSBN ID second, and name search when neither identifier is available.
Match the correct credential
A person may have RN, APRN, SANE or other records. Match the record required for the job or service.
Open View Report
Read the full report for status, expiration, compact authority and credential details rather than relying on the summary row.
Save dated primary-source proof
Download, print or email the report and record the date, verifier, purpose and exact credential checked.
What to read in the KBN verification report
| Report item | Why it matters | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Credential type | RN, LPN, APRN, temporary, provisional and certifications provide different authority. | An RN record alone proves APRN or SANE authority. |
| Current status | Status determines whether the record can be relied on today. | A visible license number means the license is active. |
| Expiration date | A report can be accurate on one date and stale later. | An old printout is sufficient for a new hiring decision. |
| Single-state or multistate | Multistate authority affects eligible RN/LPN practice across compact states. | Every Kentucky RN or LPN license is multistate. |
| APRN details | APRN practice requires RN authority, APRN licensure and current national certification. | An NPI, employer page or prescription profile proves current KBN authority. |
| Public discipline | Restrictions or public actions may affect employment and patient safety. | A current expiration date means there has never been discipline. |
KBN lookup, Nursys or written verification: choose by recipient
| What you need | Correct service | Current cost | Practical result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current Kentucky status for yourself, a patient or employer file | KBN public verification report | Free | Download, print or email primary-source Kentucky verification. |
| Public participating-board license and discipline check | Nursys QuickConfirm | Free public search | Review participating-board licensure and public discipline information. |
| Send Kentucky RN/LPN verification to another U.S. board | Nursys verification transfer | $30 per license type, per state | The receiving board accesses the paid verification electronically. |
| Send Kentucky APRN verification to another U.S. board | KBN APRN request route | No fee under current KBN guidance | Provide the Kentucky APRN number and receiving U.S. board as instructed by KBN. |
| Verification for a non-U.S. board or another entity | Other Application in Nurse Portal | $50 non-refundable | Allow 7–14 business days and provide the recipient’s official email when applicable. |

These amounts come from the current official KBN fee schedule. All KBN fees are non-refundable and subject to change.

| RN/LPN endorsement | $165 | Nursys and background-check costs can be separate. |
| RN/LPN reinstatement | $135 | Competency documentation depends on how long the license has lapsed. |

Kentucky RN, LPN and APRN continuing education decision guide
| Your situation | Core requirement | What to keep |
|---|---|---|
| RN or LPN using the standard CE option | 14 nursing contact hours during November 1–October 31. | Certificate with name, course, date, hours, provider and provider approval. |
| RN or LPN using employment evaluation | Satisfactory evaluation covering at least six months plus seven contact hours. | KBN employment-evaluation form and CE certificates. |
| RN or LPN with qualifying national certification | A current practice-related national nursing certification can satisfy an annual option. | Certificate or wallet card showing name, certification and expiration. |
| APRN | Current national certification satisfies the RN 14-hour requirement; complete at least five pharmacology hours annually. | National certification and pharmacology CE certificates. |
| APRN with DEA registration and KASPER account | At least three of the five pharmacology hours must address pain management or addiction disorders. | Certificate identifying qualifying pharmacology content. |
| APRN authorized for medicinal-cannabis certifications | An additional three contact hours in the required medicinal-cannabis subjects each year. | Approved CE certificate and authorization records. |
One-time CE is not the same for every nurse
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
All nurses need one contact hour once. Nurses active on July 15, 2024 have until October 31, 2027; later licensees generally have three years from initial licensure.
Domestic violence and pediatric abusive head trauma
Requirements depend on where and when the nurse completed nursing education. They are one-time, not annual, when applicable.
Suicide prevention
Some nurses must complete two contact hours within three years of initial licensure based on education history.
LPN infusion therapy
An affected LPN must complete the qualifying course before performing infusion therapy; it is not a blanket annual requirement for every LPN.
Check official APRN CE rules
Kentucky compact license check: four questions to answer
Is the credential RN or LPN?
The RN/LPN Nurse Licensure Compact does not currently cover the separate APRN license.
Does the report show multistate?
Do not infer compact authority merely because Kentucky is a compact state.
Where is the nurse’s primary residence?
Legal residence, not property ownership, determines the compact home-state license.
Where is the patient located?
For remote practice, verify authority where the patient receives nursing services.
Application status: “submitted” is not “licensed”
To see missing requirements
- Log in to the KBN Nurse Portal.
- Scroll to Submitted License Applications.
- Select View Status beside the application.
- Review every outstanding item.
Before starting work
- Do not rely on a receipt or completed checklist.
- Wait for the license, provisional license or temporary permit to be issued.
- Confirm the issued authority in the public verification portal.
- Match supervision and location limits to the permit type.
Provisional license vs temporary work permit
| Authority | Who uses it | Supervision | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provisional license | RNA, LPNA or APRNA after KBN application requirements are met. | Direct supervision is required; the responsible nurse must be physically present and immediately available. | Kentucky-only and generally valid no longer than six months; certain examination outcomes can void it sooner. |
| Temporary work permit | May be issued during RN/LPN endorsement while KBN waits for original-state verification. | KBN endorsement guidance states supervision is not required for practice on this permit. | Valid six months and only in Kentucky. |
Kentucky endorsement: documents and timing that commonly delay approval
| Requirement | What to do | Delay to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Nurse Portal application | Submit the endorsement application and non-refundable $165 fee. | Letting the one-year application period expire before all requirements are met. |
| Jurisprudence examination | Complete it after a current application is on file and earn the required passing score. | Trying to access it before submitting the application. |
| Background check | Complete the state and federal fingerprint-based process through the KBN-designated IdentoGO route. | Using a background check completed for a different purpose. |
| Original-state verification | Order verification from the state where you passed NCLEX and first received the license; use Nursys if that board participates. | Ordering verification from only the most recent state instead of the original examination state. |
| Transcript, when applicable | Use an accepted direct electronic, mailed or sealed method when KBN requires a transcript. | Uploading an unofficial applicant copy when direct official delivery is required. |
| Practice-history CE | If licensed over five years but lacking 500 practice hours in the last five years, complete 120 CE hours within the application year. | Waiting until late in the application year to start 120 hours. |
Reinstatement after a Kentucky license lapses
Once a license lapses, normal renewal is no longer the correct route. The nurse must stop practice, submit reinstatement and satisfy the competency option that matches the lapse period.
| Time since lapse | Examples of accepted competency routes | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Within 12 months | 14 CE; or satisfactory evaluation plus 7 CE; or qualifying 500 hours of non-Kentucky nursing employment; or another listed validation method. | Choose one valid route and upload proof with reinstatement. |
| 12 months and one day to 2 years | 28 CE with at least 14 earned in the past year, or qualifying 500 hours of non-Kentucky employment. | Verify the exact lapse date before purchasing CE. |
| 2 years and one day to 3 years | 42 CE with at least 14 earned in the past year, or qualifying 500 hours of non-Kentucky employment. | Organize all certificates before submitting. |
| 3 years and one day to 4 years | 56 CE with at least 14 earned in the past year, or another accepted route shown by KBN. | Confirm current requirements before completing a large CE package. |
Kentucky APRN verification needs three separate checks
RN foundation
Confirm a current Kentucky RN license or qualifying current RN multistate license.
Kentucky APRN license
Match the APRN role and population focus to the service being performed.
National certification
Confirm that current KBN-approved national certification is on file and not expiring.
Employer and credentialing workflow
Before hire or first shift
- Match identity to the full KBN report.
- Verify the exact credential required for the role.
- Confirm status, expiration and compact authority.
- Check APRN designation and certification when relevant.
- Review public discipline using the appropriate official source.
- Save the report, date and verifier name.
After hire
Use Nursys e-Notify for no-cost alerts about expiration, status and publicly available discipline for enrolled RN, LPN and APRN records.
For SRNA hiring, complete the registry and abuse-status checks required for long-term-care employment rather than relying on an RN/LPN-only process.
Open Nursys e-NotifyKentucky nursing complaint workflow
Confirm KBN is the correct regulator
KBN handles covered complaints involving nurses, dialysis technicians, LCPMs and suspected unlicensed practice in those roles.
Prepare the complaint before opening the form
Write a factual timeline and collect names, dates, location, credential number if known and supporting documents.
Save the generated complaint number
You will need it if the form times out or KBN must reconnect documents to the submission.
Avoid the 30-minute inactivity timeout
Draft the narrative before starting. If the form times out, follow the KBN email instructions and include the complaint number.
Use the backup document route only when upload fails
KBN lists KBNdisciplinealert@ky.gov, fax 502-429-3353 and mail to the Investigation Branch for document-upload problems.
Avoid fake renewal and investigation calls
Do not pay under pressure
A caller threatening immediate suspension is not a reason to provide banking details, gift cards, passwords or verification codes.
End the call and verify independently
Use the KBN phone number published on kbn.ky.gov instead of a number provided by the caller or text message.
Check official records
Review Nurse Portal messages and the public license report before acting on an unexpected claim.

Common mistakes that cause a failed lookup, renewal or office contact
| Mistake | Why it fails | Better action |
|---|---|---|
| Using only the search-result row | It may omit details shown in the full report. | Open View Report and save it. |
| Logging into Nurse Portal for a public lookup | The private portal is for account actions, not the simplest public verification. | Use the public License Verification Portal. |
| Assuming Kentucky means multistate | Compact eligibility must be shown on the RN/LPN record. | Confirm multistate status and PSOR. |
| Waiting until October 31 with reportable history | Certified documents and review can delay renewal. | Apply early and upload complete records. |
| Using a 2025 PDF as a 2026 notice | The linked PDFs still display 2025 dates. | Use the live renewal page and current Nurse Portal application. |
| Visiting without checking the staff directory | Many issues are handled online or by a specific branch. | Check View Status, gather details and call the correct branch first. |

Kentucky Nursing License Verification FAQs
How do I verify a Kentucky nursing license online?
Use the Kentucky Board of Nursing License Verification Portal. Search by license number, NCSBN ID or name, select the correct credential and open View Report for the complete primary-source record.
Is Kentucky nursing license verification free?
Yes. The public KBN verification report is free and can be downloaded, printed or emailed. Paid services are used when verification must be transmitted to another board or entity or when a separate written service is requested.
Should I use KBN or Nursys to verify a Kentucky nurse?
Use KBN for current Kentucky licensure, credential, compact and prescriptive-authority details. Use Nursys QuickConfirm for participating-board license and discipline information, e-Notify for monitoring and paid Nursys verification when an RN or LPN verification must be sent to another U.S. board.
How can I tell if a Kentucky RN or LPN license is multistate?
Open the full KBN report and confirm that multistate privileges are displayed. A Kentucky-issued license is not automatically multistate, and the separate APRN license is not currently covered by the RN/LPN Nurse Licensure Compact.
When is Kentucky nursing license renewal in 2026?
The annual renewal period for LPN, RN, APRN, DT and SANE credentials is September 15 through midnight October 31 Eastern Time. The Apply for Renewal link appears in the Nurse Portal during that window.
Can I renew before completing Kentucky nursing CE?
Yes. You may submit renewal and pay before finishing CE, but all required continuing education must be earned by midnight October 31 Eastern Time.
How many CE hours do Kentucky RNs and LPNs need?
The standard annual option is 14 nursing contact hours earned from November 1 through October 31. KBN also recognizes other listed competency options, and supporting records must be kept for five years.
What happens if a Kentucky nursing license is not renewed by October 31?
The license or credential lapses, and practice is prohibited. The nurse must complete the applicable reinstatement process and wait until valid authority appears in the public record before returning to practice.
What is the difference between a Kentucky provisional license and a temporary permit?
A provisional RNA, LPNA or APRNA license requires direct supervision and is Kentucky-only, generally for no longer than six months. An endorsement temporary work permit is also Kentucky-only and valid for six months, but KBN guidance states that practice on that permit does not require supervision.
How do I file a complaint against a Kentucky nurse?
Use the official KBN complaint route, prepare a factual timeline and documents before starting, save the generated complaint number and avoid 30 minutes of inactivity because the form can time out. KBN provides email, fax and mail options when document upload fails.
